Crowns

When a tooth needs a restoration or you want to improve your smile, sometimes the best choice is a porcelain crown.  A porcelain crown is precision-crafted in a dental laboratory, so it may take two appointments to restore your tooth with a porcelain crown.

Two reasons why it is best to place a crown is either a cracked tooth or large amounts of decay.  

Cracked Tooth:

Teeth can crack for a number of reasons.  One is that they endure a trememndous amount of pressure from biting and chewing every day, and as teeth age, they may lose some of their original strength.  The heavy stresses of clenching and grinding can also weaken teeth.  

Amalgam fillings may also be the cause.  Amalgam fillings swell when they absorb the natural moisture in your mouth.  This expansion can create a wedging effect in the tooth, which can fracture or break tooth structure.

Large Decay

When a tooth has a large cavity, a filling may not be adequate to rebuild the tooth.  The best treatment is often to protect the tooth with a crown.
